The Whitehorse Chronicles is a trilogy of adventure novels written to describe a scenario of life three centuries from now when the world will have been impacted by climate change and depletion of fossil fuels and other essential resources. The stories involve the people living in the interior valleys of the Yukon, the Valley People, who have adapted to climate change and resource depletion, but now struggle to keep a progressive and just society functioning in the face of a host of problems. Overwhelmed by drought, storms, floods, rising sea levels and heat, the governments have broken down in other parts of the continent and old boundaries have been redrawn. To mitigate global warming, Valley people have banned coal, oil and natural gas from use. Militant, authoritarian tribes and states that have grown out of the chaos, now covet these resources. A flood of refugees that has been created by the disorder have moved to the valleys bringing with them their cultures and technologies. However, much of the knowledge and technology gained during the Golden Age (1820-2078 C.E.) when civilization flourished has been lost. The trilogy tells how the Valley people seek to recover this lost knowledge and bring about a second Renaissance in this challenging time. It is seen through the eyes of two young people, Capability Ironshank and Amy Brown, and their friends who accompany them on their grand adventures that take them on their journeys across the North American continent.
I have tried to weave my knowledge of the environmental impacts of global warming and fossil fuel depletion on society together into a setting for gripping, insightful tales. In addition, I have tried to add satire and humour to create lively and engaging narrative. The science is realistic, the geography and place names real and the outcomes highly possible.
Excerpts of the novels are found under the novel titles.
